Business Session - National Issues Update To be filed for 1 hr. P&C of L&H

Following the IIABSC annual business meeting, newly elected IIABA Board Chair Mike McBride will update attendees on the recent activities and initiatives of our national association.

W. Michael “Mike” McBride, JD, is CEO of Mason-McBride Inc. and Mason McBride Capital Advisors LLC in Troy, Michigan. He was installed as Big “I” chair of the board in September 2023.  Nationally, McBride served as Michigan National Director, chaired the Trusted Choice Board of Directors and served on the Technical Affairs Committee. He was elected to the executive committee in 2017.   McBride is an expert witness consultant for insurance litigation and is a member of the Michigan Bar Association. He is also active in his community, serving on the Ferris State University Insurance Program Advisory Board and as ethics committee chair of the Orchard Lake Country Club. He has also served on the Detroit Regional Chamber PAC Committee and the Detroit Athletic Club.

Former Army Ranger Kris Paronto shares the unforgettable story of the brave men who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi and risked their life for the greater good of the world, along with key takeaways on leadership and teamwork that can be applied in any environment.

Kris Paronto is a former Army Ranger from the 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment and private security contractor. He was part of the CIA annex security team that responded to the terrorist attack on the U.S. Special Mission in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012, helping to save more than 20 lives while fighting off terrorists for over 13 hours. His story is told in the book 13 Hours, and in the major motion picture of the same name.

Closing Session - State Industry Issues Update To be filed for 2 hrs. P&C of L&H

SC Insurance Director Michael Wise will update the membership on recent activities and future initiatives of the South Carolina Department of Insurance.

Michael Wise was officially appointed as the South Carolina Director of Insurance by Gov. McMaster and confirmed by the South Carolina Senate in May 2023 after serving as the Acting Director for about a year. He has been with the Department since 2009, formerly serving as Deputy Director of Actuarial and Market Services. He is a South Carolina native and Furman University graduate.







Closing Session - Artificial Intelligence and Insurance Agents - Panic or Promise? 

The insurance industry has long used artificial intelligence; however, the new generation of tools signals a quantum leap in capability and will trigger disruption and realignments. Insurance agents face both challenges and opportunities to ride the AI wave, by using what AI can do to serve their clients while amplifying those skills and qualities AI cannot replicate. The course covers how insurers use AI tools now, how their use will evolve, and the steps agents must take to adapt.

Tom Wetzel is a 40-year insurance industry veteran and champion for independent agents, and has helped hundreds of agencies navigate the digital marketplace.  His latest focus is cybercrime and artificial intelligence and the steps agencies must take to protect themselves and their clients.  Wetzel started his career with the Insurance Information Institute, headed a state association of insurers and developed branding and issue campaigns for insurers, associations and agencies, including Aon and the Society of CPCU.  He started his own firm in 2000, has been a columnist for both Rough Notes and the Insurance Journal and has presented hundreds of presentations over the years to national and state agent associations.
